How this compares to the FGC combination tickets

FGC sells its own bundles from Plaça Espanya: Trans Montserrat, which lands around €50 and covers the metro, the return train and the ascent, and Tot Montserrat at about €71.50, which adds the museum and a buffet lunch. Both are picked up at the tourist information office in Plaça Catalunya.

So the $63.19 package here and Trans Montserrat are close cousins. The practical difference is what you hold in your hand: this one is a mobile voucher for a dated entry, the FGC version is a physical ticket you collect in advance. If your plans might shift, note that the base ticket here cannot be cancelled at all.

The order that works

The audio guide desk sits at the customer service centre and opens at 09:00 with everything else, so collect it first — reviewers who wandered off and came back for it lost half an hour. Then the Black Madonna, before the coach groups from the 10:00 departures arrive, and the museum after, which is where the queues never really form.

Getting up there

The base ticket does not include transport. Three ways up: the direct coach at $29.35 return, which drives to the monastery itself; the FGC R5 from Plaça Espanya, about an hour to either Montserrat-Aeri for the cable car or Monistrol de Montserrat for the rack railway; or the $63.19 package here, which folds the train and the cremallera into the ticket.

Wind is the deciding factor between cable car and rack railway. The Aeri stops in high wind, the cremallera keeps running, and the coach ignores both problems by driving all the way up.

Everything opens at 09:00

The most-repeated review on this listing is a numbered list of practical notes, and it starts with that fact. One traveller asks reasonably why 08:30 and 08:45 entry slots are sold when nothing opens until nine; another booked 09:15, arrived early and was first through the door.

So book the later morning slot rather than the earliest, and if you arrive on the first coach, spend the gap on the terrace rather than queueing at a closed desk. The 4.2 rating is largely made of people who did not know this.

The order that works

Reviewers who got it right describe the same sequence: collect the audio guide at the customer service centre first, then the Black Madonna before the coach groups arrive, then the museum, which never really queues. One adds that if a tour group is already at the Madonna, letting it pass costs less time than joining behind it.

The museum also gets a specific recommendation as the best place on the mountain for souvenirs — worth knowing, since it is included in this ticket and most day-trippers walk past it.

Buy something else if

Your date might move: the base ticket cannot be cancelled, while the coach refunds free up to 24 hours ahead.
